 SPINALONGA AG.NIKOLAOS ( no BBQ)

Driving north east, we arrive at the cosmopolitan Riviera of Crete Agios Nikolaos the capital of the Lasithi prefecture of Crete. It is built around a picturesque lake at the north-western side of the Mirabello bay, the biggest bay in Crete. The beauty here is endless with the seasons succeeding one another. The climate is unique: Dry, without humidity. The area is inhabited since antiquity.

The modern city of Agios Nikolaos became internationally well-known during the 60's, "discovered" by famous cinema directors (Jules Dassin, Walt Disney etc.), BBC producers and many others.

The Bottomless lake is the most beautiful jewel of the city  connected  to the sea by a narrow canal, while its natural surroundings (red rocks within green plants) turn it into a site of great satisfaction to you can enjoy the view, while sitting at any of the coffee shops, next to the multicolored fishing boats.

According to the legend, Athena and Artemis Vritomartis were washing their hair at the deep blue waters of the lake. The natives, not able to see the bottom, called the lake bottomless or "sunk", meaning that it has been created by a landslide, until the Christian commissioner Costas Adossidis Passas connected the lake to the sea in 1867 and its stagnant waters became clear. The English naval traveler Spratt, who was mapping the island, found its depth being 210 feet (64 meters) and said that this might be the opening of an underground river.

Next stop will be the port of Elounda and after a 30’ boat trip with our comfortable boats you will arrive in Spinalonga islet.

The venetian fortress one of the most important and powerful in Venetian period will impress you as well as the history of this islet when was the isolated home of many lepers up to 1957 when it was cleared by the Health Authorities and became a great monument.

Return in the boat and traveling for a short time in to the amazing bay of Elounda you will arrive in one of the most beautiful little beach of Crete accessible only by boat Kolokytha, free time for swimming and relaxing before our way back.
